The Sports Leaders UK Level 3 Certificate in Basic Expedition Leadership (BEL)


Overview
The Sports Leader UK Level 3 Certificate in Basic Expedition Leadership is a national recognised qualification that trains and qualifies teachers, youth leaders and other members of the community to:

  • Lead walking groups in lowland country.
  • Impart the knowledge and skills needed to undertake a day walk.
  • Have a responsibility for the care of others while leading a day walk in lowland countryside.
  • Plan and lead overnight and mobile camps.

It is the minimum qualification required by some operating authorities for those wanting to train and lead groups in the expedition section of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.

Mountain Leader Training UK include the Level 3 Certificate in Basic Expedition Leadership on the qualification matrix for Climbing and Hill Walking Leaders.

Course Content
The Level 3 Certificate in Basic Expedition Leadership is split into three sections.

1) Training
Nine units are split over 127 guided learning hours.  Topics include:
  1. Plan a walk for a group in lowland countryside.
  2. Prepare a walk in lowland countryside.
  3. Establish and maintain safe practice during walks or expeditions.
  4. Lead sessions that impart the knowledge and skills required to walk in lowland countryside.
  5. Lead a walk in lowland countryside.
  6. Navigation for the walk leader.
  7. Manage and develop personal walking leadership experience.
  8. Management of unaccompanied groups in the countryside.
  9. Camp craft for the expedition leader.
2) Consolidation & Demonstration of Leadership
During this section candidates must complete the following before returning for assessment:
  • Gain a valid First Aid Certificate (Min 8 hours)
  • Complete 30 hours demonstration of leadership.
  • Complete and log a minimum of 8 day walks of at least 6 hours duration, planned and led by the candidate.
3) Assessment
  • During this section candidates will be assessed by the tutor and an external assessor.
  • The assessment takes the course of a two day overnight camping expedition during which time candidates are assessed on the areas covered during training.

The Sports Leader UK Level 2 Certificate in Basic Expedition Assistant Leader (BEAL)


Overview
The Sports Leader Level 2 Certificate in Basic Expedition Assistant Leader is a national recognised qualification that provides an ideal starting point for learners who are aged 16+ who wish to develop their outdoor leadership skills.
  • Assisting in leading walking groups in lowland countryside.
  • Impart knowledge and skills needed to undertake a day walk.
  • Have a responsibility and care of others while assisting in lowland countryside.
Course Content
The Level 2 certificate Basic Expedition Assistant Leader is split into sections:

1) Training
Five units spread over 57 guided learning hours.  Topics include:
  1. Developing outdoor leadership skills.
  2. Plan, lead and evaluate a series of expedition sessions.
  3. Lead activities that promote environmental responsibility.
  4. Developing personal journeying skills.
  5. Developing personal camp craft skills.
2) Demonstration of Leadership
In order for learners to complete Level 2 Award in Basic Expedition Assistant Leader they must complete 12 hours demonstration of leadership as part of unit 2.  The 12 hours must take place at the end of training, before the two hour independent assessment.

Kit List
You will be required to provide your own personal day walking and camping equipment for the course.  A detailed kit list will be included in the joining instructions.

Venue
Training and assessment will take place in the Chiltern's an Area of Outstanding National Beauty.

Pre Course Requirements
  • Level 3 18 years old on completion of the course.
  • Level 2 16 +.
  • There is no upper age limit.
  • Have a genuine interest in leading expeditions and teaching the associated skills.
Important Information
During the course you will be required to spend prolonged periods of time outdoors including a total of 4 overnight camps.  You will also be required to carry day sack or expedition rucksack and operate in open terrain in potentially adverse conditions.  Candidates should ensure they are well prepared for the course.
